Paju Central Library in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, will hold a series of eco-friendly events under the theme "Resource Circulation Protects the Forest" to mark Resource Circulation Day on September 6. The events are part of the library's annual key project "Hello, Neighborhood Forest," aimed at addressing the climate crisis through resident participation. In June this year, the library successfully hosted eco-experience activities including seasonal cooking, used book swaps, and clothing repair.
The core activities include a workshop turning discarded banners into eco-friendly bags, a "21% Party" secondhand clothing swap and lecture, and free distribution of old books and expired 2024 magazines. The eco-bag making will take place twice on the day, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., in the creation space on the 5th floor, open to adults with only 5 spots, and will be taught hands-on so even those without sewing machine experience can join. Each participant must make two bags, one of which will be donated to the library for future lending. The "21% Party" is organized by the "Rewear Institute," which studies clothing waste and alternative consumption culture, and will feature a talk by Paju local environmental activist Kim Sang-hee, along with an opportunity for citizens to swap secondhand clothing. The free distribution of old books and magazines will run from September 6 to 12 on the 5th floor of the library, where visitors can pick up whatever they like.
Registration is available through the Central Library's official website, and inquiries can be made at 031-940-5656 or 5709. This event reflects the role of public institutions in promoting secondhand clothing circulation and demonstrates the practice of advancing sustainable consumption through community activities.
