[China] Uniqlo's RE.UNIQLO STUDIO Lands in Beijing, Clothing Recycling Expands to Stores Nationwide
- 管理员1
On August 21, Uniqlo opened its first RE.UNIQLO STUDIO in North China at its Beijing Sanlitun global flagship store, while announcing that its clothing recycling service will expand from 4 pilot stores to all stores in mainland China, and launching a Feimayi mini-program to extend the recycling channel online. This move marks Uniqlo's further advancement of clothing circularity practices in the Chinese market.
The RE.UNIQLO STUDIO offers repair and embroidery customization services. Repair coverage includes everyday damage to T-shirts, jeans, knitwear, wool sweaters, and more, while embroidery offers over 100 patterns, including Beijing-exclusive regional designs such as Peking Opera masks and kites. Single-color embroidery costs 20 yuan, and colored patterns start at 40 yuan. The studio began in Shanghai in 2023 and now covers 5 stores nationwide, and has entered 23 countries and regions globally.
Uniqlo's clothing recycling service accepts clothing from Fast Retailing Group brands such as Uniqlo, GU, and Theory, but excludes footwear, underwear, and socks. Recycled clothing is handled centrally by Feimayi, sorted and categorized by material, and used to make recycled material products such as wood-plastic flooring, soundproof cotton, and canvas bags. Feimayi was founded in 2015 and has built a nationwide recycling network.
According to Aya Hanada, Sustainability Manager at Uniqlo China, customer response during the pilot period was positive, driving the nationwide rollout of the service. She emphasized that Uniqlo is not a traditional fast fashion brand, but pursues long-term wear of clothing and reduced environmental impact. Currently, Uniqlo is also exploring "fiber-to-fiber" recycling technology, but the technology is still at an early stage and requires industry collaboration.
Clothing recycling is an environmental action and an important part of the circular economy. Uniqlo's actions provide a sustainable development case for the apparel retail industry and also respond to consumer demand for clothing circularity.
