As the New Year approaches, many families do spring cleaning and clear out large amounts of unwanted clothing. Rather than throwing these old clothes away, consider donating them to recycling organizations—it's both eco-friendly and helps those in need. Below is a roundup of 11 organizations and companies in Hong Kong that offer old clothes recycling services for public reference.
Major Recycling Organizations
The Salvation Army's recycling program accepts donations of new or clean second-hand clothing from individuals or organizations. Some items are sold at charity shops in Hong Kong and Macau, with proceeds supporting community services. Accepted items include clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, and small appliances, but furniture, large appliances, second-hand bedding, and intimate apparel are not accepted. For donations of 5 red-white-blue bags or more, free door-to-door pickup can be arranged.
Friends of the Earth (HK) has run an old clothes recycling program since 2001, with about 200 collection points across Hong Kong. Collected clothing is given free to those in need or resold to places where there is demand. The organization also offers door-to-door pickup, but requires a minimum of 5 bags of clothing.
The Conservancy Association accepts clothing donations, but pillows, quilts, worn underwear, and socks are not eligible. Donors can drop items into collection bins themselves or arrange door-to-door pickup, which must be booked at least 3 weeks in advance. For people with disabilities who have 5 bags of clothing, a special pickup service is available.
Christian Action accepts a wider range of goods, including household items and baby products in at least 80% new condition. Free door-to-door pickup is available for 3 bags or more; otherwise a HK$200 fee applies, and only buildings with elevators are served.
In addition, the government's Community Old Clothes Recycling Bin Program has set up collection bins in many locations across Hong Kong, and MTR's "Recycling Wheels" environmental publicity vehicle also tours various districts every month.
In-Store Brand Recycling
UNIQLO has RE.UNIQLO recycling boxes at all its Hong Kong stores, but only accepts old clothes of the UNIQLO or GU brands. ZARA does not limit itself to its own brand and accepts any textiles, footwear, accessories, etc. Its stores have collection boxes, and some cities also offer home pickup. H&M likewise recycles old clothes of any brand; collection boxes can be found next to the checkout counter, and a coupon is given after submission.
Special Second-Hand Bag Programs
hellolulu has launched the "REhellolulu Old Bag Recycling Program." Bring an old bag of any brand to its APM store and receive a HK$50 cash coupon. In addition, Redress accepts children's clothing, fashion accessories, and other items, but excludes shoes, home textiles, moldy clothing, and uniforms. Collection points can be found on its official website.
Overall, the public should try to select and wash old clothes that meet the requirements before donating, to reduce the burden on organizations and maximize the effectiveness of both environmental protection and charitable action.
