The Environmental Protection Bureau of the Yilan County Government, in cooperation with the WAWA Market, held a secondhand market on September 12 at the "Water and Fire from the Same Source" scenic spot in Wuyuan Community, Dongshan Township, inviting 50 stalls to participate, replacing waste with sharing and promoting the concept of resource recycling. Tzu Chi Dongshan Township community volunteers were also invited to set up a stall. The event ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Organizers encouraged the public to bring brand-new unused items from home, or secondhand items in about 80% new condition, to the site for sale. Items on display and for sale included new and secondhand clothing, jeans, daily necessities, stuffed dolls, small home appliances, children's books, toys, jewelry, children's shoes, children's clothing, hats, crocheted yarn, suitcases, baking supplies, and more, attracting many visitors to hunt for treasures in a lively atmosphere.
Tzu Chi Dongshan Recycling Station's Xifu House also took part by setting up a charity sale stall, offering brand-new unused household items from home, as well as secondhand clothing, utensils, and small home appliances donated from various sources. All proceeds from the day's sales were donated in full to aid flood victims in Nepal.
Ms. Huang of the Environmental Protection Bureau's Waste Management Section praised participants for their environmental awareness and for doing their part for the Earth, and took a group photo with Tzu Chi volunteers before the event ended. The event aimed to achieve multiple goals, including item sharing, sustainable living, cherishing the life of goods, reducing plastic, and fostering neighborly ties.
For the used-clothing trade industry, this kind of community-based secondhand market reflects the domestic reuse channel for surplus clothing locally, complementing the export-oriented used-clothing supply chain—before clothing enters commercial sorting and cross-border circulation, its service life is first extended through the market, a concrete example of the concept of "cherishing blessings" being put into practice on the consumer end.
