When you sort through your wardrobe at the change of seasons, those clothes, shoes, and bags you no longer wear actually still have somewhere to go. Two used clothing recycling and donation programs in Taiwan have recently opened for collections one after another: Taipei's "Xinyi Used Clothing Recycling" has reopened for collections starting September 20, while "Step 30" will hold its third limited-time collection drive of the year from September 30 to October 3. The two drives have different acceptance criteria, so it's best to sort things out clearly before you start packing.

Xinyi Used Clothing Recycling: Resumes Collections from September 20

Located in Wenshan District, Taipei City, Xinyi Used Clothing Recycling accepts items via four methods: drop-off in person, mail, home delivery, or freight. For clothing, spring and summer items have no restrictions on age, gender, or new/used condition—tops, dresses, pants, and skirts are all accepted; for adult winter clothing, only dresses and coats in 90% new condition are accepted. Shoes must be at least 80% new; handbags and backpacks must also be at least 80% new, with no damage, oxidation, or peeling. Each box or bag is limited to a maximum weight of 12 kilograms.

Not all used items are accepted. The organization explicitly lists excluded items: men's and women's suit jackets, winter pants, and long jeans; quilts, pillows, bed sheets, scarves, towels, socks, stuffed toys, books, and electrical appliances are also excluded. For footwear, high heels, slippers, and snow boots are not accepted; for bags, hard-shell wheeled suitcases, reusable shopping bags, event or eco-themed canvas bags, non-woven bags, and bags bearing event logos are all not accepted.

The donation mailing address is "Xinyi Used Clothing Recycling Project, No. 16, Jingming Street, Wenshan District, Taipei City 116." Collection hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a break from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM, and closed on statutory holidays. Consultation phone numbers are (02) 2931-2001 or (02) 2931-7127.

If you have a small quantity of boutique or spring/summer clothing, you can also use FamilyMart store-to-store shipping. The designated receiving store is "FamilyMart Wanfu Store," store code 017119, service number 57119, recipient "Kang Yuan-hong," contact phone 0928-681-720 (this number is exclusively for pickup by work team trainees).

Step 30: Four-Day Limited Collection from September 30 to October 3

"Step 30" has scheduled its third shipping collection drive of the year for September 30 to October 3, collecting shoes in good condition with good coverage, lightweight clothing, and A4-sized bags. The public can send items via post office, major logistics providers, or FamilyMart store-to-store shipping. The receiving address is "Bethlehem Warehouse, No. 48, Nanshi 4th Street, Linkou District, New Taipei City." The association reminds senders that before shipping shoes, the two shoes should be secured together as a pair, and supplies can be packed directly into cardboard boxes without the need for separate plastic bags; all shoes, clothing, and bags sent must be clean, intact, and still suitable for use—items that are clearly damaged or no longer usable should not be sent.

FamilyMart convenience stores are adding a charitable bonus during this collection period: for every store-to-store package sent, FamilyMart will donate an additional 10 NT dollars to support international shipping of supplies.

The rules of the two drives have different emphases—Xinyi Used Clothing Recycling focuses on eligible general clothing, shoes, and bags, with weight and item restrictions; Step 30 concentrates on shoes, lightweight clothing, and A4 bags, and is only open for four days. While doing your seasonal wardrobe clean-out, first check the condition and completeness of your items, then compare them against each program's rules to choose the right shipping channel, so that usable supplies are truly accepted.
