The German Red Cross (DRK) Giessen-Marburg County branch recently announced that it will completely remove all used clothing collection bins in its jurisdiction, and will only accept clothing donations at its stores from now on. The branch's stated reasons are: the income generated by the collection bins has continued to decline, and they have long been abused as dumping points for garbage, making operations unsustainable.

According to the branch, volunteers and staff are forced to handle large amounts of waste that is not clothing, sorting and disposal costs are high, while the recycling revenue from usable textiles is shrinking. This imbalance between costs and returns has made used clothing collection, originally a means of charitable fundraising, completely economically unviable.

Local municipal authorities are also looking for solutions to the garbage problem around the collection bins. After the bins are removed, used clothing donations can only be made through the Red Cross's physical stores, meaning donation channels will narrow and convenience will decline.

A person in charge of the branch expressed pessimism about the current situation, saying "this system probably can no longer be saved," and pointed out that the high-trust environment in society is being eroded—the behavior of casually dumping waste and damaging public recycling facilities is a manifestation of this loss of trust. The person also mentioned that strengthening publicity and education would help.

The report also places this issue in a larger context: the proliferation of fast fashion is posing a threat to the global used clothing recycling system.

For the used clothing trade industry, this incident is another signal of pressure on the collection end in Europe. As community collection bins withdraw in large numbers due to cost and abuse issues, the supply of textile raw materials that can enter the sorting and reuse stage will further tighten, while also pushing the difficulties of textile collection and recycling in Germany and even the EU to the forefront again.
