As World Environment Day and the university graduation season converge in June, the Zhulü Environmental Protection Association at the School of Environment and Energy Engineering, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, organized an old clothing recycling campaign titled "Threads of Green, A New Journey Begins," collecting idle garments from students on campus.
The event was held at a campus collection point, where students donating clothes streamed in continuously. Most of these garments had been everyday wear during campus life, carrying students' memories. After collection, the association sorted and processed the clothes by condition: garments in relatively good shape will undergo professional cleaning and disinfection before being donated to people in need in impoverished areas; clothes no longer suitable for wearing are handed over to professional recycling agencies, where they are regenerated into recycled fibers, fillers, and other materials, re-entering the resource circulation chain.
The organizers said they hope participants will bring the environmental awareness formed through the campaign back into their daily lives, starting with small actions such as saving electricity and green commuting. When environmentally friendly behavior becomes a habit, individual actions add up to considerable ecological benefits.
For the old clothing recycling industry, this campus campaign offers a window for observation: the university graduation season is a period of concentrated generation of idle textiles, and students' garments tend to be relatively new and of higher sorting value. The portion still wearable enters donation channels, while the portion that cannot be worn enters the processing of recycled fibers and fillers—this is consistent with the front-end sorting logic of the old clothing export and recycling industry chain, and also shows that campus scenarios are becoming a stable source within the secondhand textile recycling system.
