Key points
- Garment exports rose from $7.8 billion to $11 billion over four years, with an average annual growth rate of 15.25% among traditional export products.
- In the first eight months of this year, Cambodia's exports to major markets exceeded $24 billion, with the United States, Vietnam, and China as the top three destinations, reaching $10.6 billion, $2.9 billion, and $1.3 billion respectively.
- Over the same period, Cambodia's imports totaled $26.5 billion, with China, Vietnam, and Singapore as the top three suppliers, at $14.2 billion, $3 billion, and $1.5 billion respectively.
According to another report from Cambodia's General Department of Customs and Excise, in the first eight months of this year Cambodia's total trade with major partners exceeded $50 billion, up 20% year on year; exports grew 19.7% and imports grew 20.7%. Ministry of Commerce data also show that in the first eight months of this year Cambodia earned $24 billion from exports, also up 19.7% year on year.
In terms of export market structure, the United States ranked first with $10.6 billion, followed by Vietnam with $2.9 billion and China with $1.3 billion. On the import side, China held the largest supplier position with $14.2 billion, followed by Vietnam with $3 billion and Singapore with $1.5 billion.
Looking at the overall traditional export basket, categories other than garments showed mixed performance: rice exports rose from $445 million to $640 million, while paddy rice exports fell from $1 billion to $600 million. The fastest-growing categories were elsewhere — tire exports surged from $258 million to more than $2 billion, and toy and sporting goods exports rose from $140 million to more than $1 billion.
For the second-hand clothing and textile and apparel trade industry, Cambodia is one of the world's major garment production and export bases, and the continued expansion of its garment exports means that upstream fabric and accessory demand and the capacity competition landscape will continue to evolve, while the dominant position of the U.S. market in its exports also suggests that relevant supply chain companies need to pay attention to the stability of orders to the United States.
