[US] eBay Seller Communication Channels Shrink as CEO Iannone Still Claims to Be "Always Listening"
- 管理员1
eBay CEO Jamie Iannone recently reiterated in a Fast Company interview the importance of listening to employee and seller feedback to his leadership style, but data shows that public channels for direct interaction between eBay sellers and company staff have continued to shrink since 2022.
Key Points
- When Iannone returned to eBay in 2020, he wrote a 10-page white paper to the board outlining his ideas for reviving the marketplace, and said listening was key to shaping his leadership approach.
- GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen has made an acquisition offer of approximately $56 billion and has directly engaged with the seller community in recent months, participating in multiple long-form interviews with seller content creators.
- eBay shut down its weekly US community chats in 2024 and removed comments and most social interactions from eBay Council; weekly chats in the UK and Germany were also terminated earlier this year.
Iannone made these remarks while promoting the interview on LinkedIn. He mentioned learning about what eBay needs to improve through conversations with company leadership, employees, and buyers, and recalled sitting next to two handbag sellers at a dinner years ago, where he learned that the 12-photo listing limit prevented sellers from fully showing details of vintage bags, after which eBay doubled the upload limit to 24 photos. But that adjustment happened in 2022, and since then eBay has progressively cut back public channels for sellers to communicate directly with company staff.
Recent cases of sellers directly reaching company executives have mostly come from outside acquirers. GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen sought to acquire eBay earlier this year with an offer of approximately $56 billion, which was rejected by eBay's board. He then spent months communicating directly with eBay shareholders and sellers, including a roughly 45-minute conversation in May with seller, YouTuber, and Flipwise co-founder Justin Glow, and later met with seller Ryan Roots. Both Glow and Roots said they had extended similar interview invitations to Iannone but received no response.
Iannone's promises encompass a "tighter feedback loop" that did not materialize in 2021: at eBay Open 2021 he already mentioned a "tighter feedback loop," but the event was mostly pre-recorded content, and comments were disabled on the replay of Iannone's keynote and on a large number of videos on eBay's official YouTube channel.
In the US, eBay completely canceled its monthly community chats in 2024; at the start of last year, weekly chats in the UK and Germany were also terminated, with eBay citing community feedback. At the same time, eBay increasingly relies on selected volunteer "Mentors" as intermediaries, providing them with advance updates and policy change information to answer community questions, but related confidentiality requirements have created friction with other sellers.
Iannone has also repeatedly claimed that eBay does not compete with sellers. In a 2024 LinkedIn conversation with veteran seller Linda Lightman, he said, "eBay only succeeds when sellers succeed." Lightman has since moved her business to Poshmark—which acquired part of Linda's Stuff's business to revamp its own consignment program. Less than a month after completing the $1.4 billion acquisition of Depop, eBay began giving Depop prominent placement on its homepage and at the top of search, directing shoppers to complete transactions off-platform; eBay's own sellers, meanwhile, must pay for similar ad placements and are prohibited from directing buyers away from the platform.
Tensions also exist at the employee level. Former chief architect Randy Shoup described a zero-sum "Game of Thrones"-style culture, saying employees who raised questions could become targets, and that he left after clashing with a long-tenured vice president over concerns about delays in a major architecture refactoring project. Former senior technical product managers Amanda Bartolotta and Paige Williams filed separate lawsuits alleging harassment, discrimination, and retaliation; eBay denied both sets of allegations, and Williams's lawsuit was dismissed without prejudice after she stopped participating. Employees at eBay-owned TCGPlayer voted to form eBay's first US union in 2023, and more than two years since then there have been multiple unfair labor practice allegations, including surveillance, coercion, retaliation, and bad-faith bargaining. The union also accused eBay of union-busting by closing the Syracuse authentication center, laying off more than 200 people, and moving operations to Kentucky.
For US and cross-border secondhand sellers, the narrowing of communication channels with platform leadership means that input paths for policy feedback and product improvements are shifting from public forums to a small number of authorized volunteers and closed beta groups, further compressing sellers' space for collective voice.
