Starcrush, a vintage clothing and accessories store, opened on September 25 on Gonçalves Crespo Street in Lisbon, with vintage clothing starting at €5 and a simultaneous display of film-related items collected by founder Vitor Moreiro. The store, run by the 28-year-old owner, brings fashion and pop culture memories together in one space, with clothing for men and women, most items priced between €5 and €40, and accessories from €5 to €8.90.

Key Points

  • Starcrush opened on September 25 on Gonçalves Crespo Street in Lisbon, with clothing starting at €5.
  • The owner, Vitor Moreiro, 28, has collected film costumes and props for years; some pieces are displayed in the store but are not for sale.
  • In addition to local Portuguese sources, stock comes from suppliers, collectors, vintage events, and large warehouses in countries including the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and the UK.

Products sold in the store include leather jackets, studded garments, bracelets, and dresses, with most womenswear inspired by 1990s and 2000s styles. The private collection hanging in the store is not merchandise; it includes items related to Child's Play (Chucky) and Iron Man, as well as a Game Boy, forming part of the store experience. Moreiro says his love of 1990s and early 2000s films, especially horror movies from that period, was one of the inspirations for the concept. He describes his Lisbon store as more than a place to buy old clothes; he wants customers to feel as if they have stepped into a carefully decorated room from that era.

However, Moreiro stresses that the store is not simply chasing the current Y2K revival trend. For an item to be selected, it must genuinely be from that era, not merely imitate the style of the time; this distinction shows in the cut and fit, as some jackets in the store are typically more fitted rather than the loose, oversized shapes common today.

Moreiro lived in London for many years and studied fashion at the Academy of Fashion before returning to Portugal and deciding to create a brand reflecting his interests and style. To find the right pieces, he searches beyond Portugal's local second-hand market. Together with his partner Daniel, who is also involved in the project, he sources from suppliers and collectors in places including the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and the UK, and also attends vintage-focused events and large warehouses, where he inspects goods in person before deciding what to buy. Moreiro believes this hands-on selection method is crucial for judging the condition, fabric, and details of second-hand clothing.

According to NiT, the idea for Starcrush came from Moreiro's long-held desire to have his own project, rather than jumping on the vintage and Y2K fashion trend at the last minute. Since opening, the store has attracted visitors interested in both sides of the concept. Moreiro says customers are especially drawn to the way clothing is combined with the quirky film memorabilia scattered throughout the store.
