Far Eastern SOGO has announced its latest textile circularity results: its 2025 old clothing recycling volume reached 8 tons, making it a benchmark for department stores promoting textile circularity. Meanwhile, since launching the "SOGO Sustain Good Goods Good Choices" publication in November 2021, the department store has published 11 issues, reaching a cumulative 6.07 million people, recommending more than 2,500 sustainable products, with 295,000 interactions on sustainable knowledge through the SOGO APP.
Key Points
- Far Eastern SOGO's 2025 old clothing recycling volume reached 8 tons. Consumers can extend the life of clothing through alteration, charity sales, donation, remaking, and downcycling reuse.
- The department store spent a year remaking 3,483 retired uniforms, about 1.5 tons of clothing, into food service trays made of 15% rPET + 85% rPP material for the "Far Eastern Garden City" food court, the department store industry's first tray regenerated from clothing and made of 100% eco-friendly material.
- Fuxing Hall will hold the "Clothing Circularity Together" sustainable fashion exhibition from October 8 to 10 in the 9th-floor atrium. Bringing old clothes for on-site recycling or participating in a quiz can earn HAPPY GO points: 10 points per item of clothing, capped at 50 points per day. The smart recycling machine activity has been extended to October 18.
In terms of the specific operation of old clothing recycling, Far Eastern SOGO designates April and October each year as key promotion "Sustainability Months," and selects products from within its stores that combine practicality and sustainable concepts, covering multiple areas such as lifestyle, food, and daily necessities, guiding consumers to practice green consumption.
The regeneration of retired uniforms is the core case disclosed this time. The department store took 3,483 uniforms, totaling 1.5 tons of clothing, and over the course of a year, through circular regeneration technology, made them into food service trays of 15% rPET plus 85% rPP material, all of which are used in the "Far Eastern Garden City" food court, making it the department store industry's first tray regenerated from clothing and made of 100% eco-friendly material.
Regarding offline recycling activities, Zhongxiao Hall will launch "Secondhand Clothing Donation, Let Love Continue" from October 16 to 18 at the 12th-floor gift redemption area. Successful donation of 1 kilogram of clothing earns 20 HAPPY GO points, inviting consumers to donate idle clothing from home to people in need.
In addition to old clothing, the department store's waste reduction measures also include continued promotion of "cosmetics empty bottle recycling" and "sales detail consolidation"; since March this year, Zhongxiao Hall's self-operated supermarket Fresh Mart no longer provides free paper bags; in June, it further joined hands with chain supermarkets at various operating locations to respond to the Ministry of Environment's "Bag-to-Bag" program. Fuxing Hall, Tianmu Store, and Zhongli Store also joined the paper bag recycling effort, setting up paper bag sharing stations in the stores, placing clean paper bags into recycling boxes, which are then sorted by dedicated staff and provided to people in need.
For the old clothing trade and textile circularity industry, Far Eastern SOGO's case demonstrates the collection capacity of department store channels as a front-end entry point for old clothing recycling, as well as a closed-loop path for transforming corporate retired uniforms through regeneration technology into supplies for its own commercial scenarios, providing a referable practical approach for the localized disposal and reuse of clothing waste.
