The Keelung City Government Environmental Protection Bureau, in partnership with a local clothing retailer, has set up an old clothing recycling bin at a clothing store in Ren'ai District, Keelung City, from now until October 31, launching an "old clothes for new clothes" discount event: members of the public who submit clean, dry, reusable old clothing can get NT$10 off per item at the store, with a maximum of 5 items per person, for a maximum discount of NT$50 in shopping credit.

Key Points

  • Event period: from now until October 31, 2026, at "Miss Pork Clothing Store," No. 9, Lane 54, Ai 2nd Road, Ren'ai District, Keelung City.
  • Discount rules: NT$10 off per item of old clothing recycled, limited to 5 items per person, with a maximum discount of NT$50.
  • Recycling scope: usable clothing such as outerwear, outer pants, skirts, dresses, vests, coats, and suits, which must first be cleaned and sorted, kept dry, and properly packaged.

The Keelung City Environmental Protection Bureau stated that this cross-sector collaboration aims to encourage private clothing retailers to join the environmental protection effort and provide citizens with a more convenient channel for old clothing recycling. The event is jointly promoted by the Environmental Protection Bureau and a local clothing retailer, with the recycling bin set up inside the store; after recycling old clothing, members of the public can use the discount when shopping at the store.

The Environmental Protection Bureau explained that the recycled clothing is limited to usable items such as outerwear, outer pants, skirts, dresses, vests, coats, and suits, so as to ensure that resources can be effectively reused and to maintain the store environment. Before handing in old clothing, members of the public must first clean and sort it, keep it dry, and package it properly to extend the service life of the clothing.

Ma Chung-hao, Director of the Environmental Protection Bureau, called on citizens to choose the correct recycling channels for reusable old clothing at home and not to discard it at will; this can not only reduce the burden of waste disposal but also give old clothing a new life.

For the old clothing recycling industry, this type of approach—in which local governments work with retail outlets to set up recycling points and use shopping discounts as incentives—provides a consumer-facing, grassroots model for the old clothing collection segment; its recycling standards emphasize "clean, dry, reusable," once again highlighting the importance of upstream sorting and preparation for the subsequent circulation value.
