IKEA UK recently announced that it will soon launch a secondhand furniture marketplace for IKEA Family members. The platform allows members to buy and sell secondhand IKEA products directly with one another, aiming to give old furniture a new lease on life. This move follows pilots in Spain and Norway and marks another important step in IKEA's circular economy strategy.
An IKEA spokesperson emphasized in a statement: "We are always exploring new ways to make home life better and help customers discover products they love. The launch of the UK secondhand marketplace is an important step toward simplifying how people access pre-owned IKEA furniture." The spokesperson also said the platform aims to make transactions between IKEA Family members simple, convenient, and worthwhile, with the goal of building a trusted and active community.
IKEA will announce more details about the platform's specific launch date and how to participate in the coming months.
Notably, there were other industry developments worth watching this week. Wonder partnered with Serve Robotics to launch autonomous delivery services via the Grubhub platform in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Alexandria, covering hundreds of merchants. Meanwhile, livestream shopping app Tilt released its Clips feature, allowing users to quickly create product listings via short videos and significantly simplifying the secondhand trading process. Tilt has raised $26 million from multiple institutions, including Vinted Ventures, showing continued investor interest in the secondhand trading space.
These cases reflect that both large furniture retailers and emerging tech platforms are exploring digital tools to facilitate the circulation of secondhand goods and promote sustainable consumption patterns.
