[China] Guangzhou Customs Seizes 230 Tons of Smuggled Used Clothing in Crackdown on Foreign Waste
- 管理员1
Recently, Guangzhou Customs seized a batch of smuggled used clothing during a special operation, totaling as much as 230 tons — a major achievement in the customs authorities' ongoing efforts to combat solid waste smuggling. This enforcement action demonstrates the high-pressure stance against illegal foreign waste activities.
According to the announcement, the seized used clothing is solid waste prohibited from entering the country, commonly known as foreign waste. These goods not only have questionable sanitary conditions and may carry large amounts of bacteria and viruses, but also pose a threat to the environment and public health. In recent years, customs authorities have carried out multiple special campaigns targeting used clothing smuggling; in 2021, a case of smuggled used clothing of a similar scale was also seized, and those responsible were dealt with according to law.
Most of this intercepted used clothing originated from overseas and was transferred into the country through illegal channels, disguised as ordinary textiles for sale. China has strict laws and regulations on the import of waste textiles, prohibiting the entry of used clothing that has not undergone cleaning and disinfection and that may spread diseases or harmful substances. Foreign waste used clothing that is not intercepted by customs often flows into a lucrative gray market, but regulatory authorities will continue to strengthen port inspections and enforcement to safeguard the ecosystem and the health and safety of citizens.
