Waterford City and County Council has announced that an interactive exhibition titled "Material World" will open at Waterford Central Library on September 18, aiming to explore the relationship between fast fashion, textile waste and climate action. Mayor Liam Brazil will host the opening ceremony.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a global sculpture made entirely from recycled textiles, visually demonstrating the fashion industry's impact on the environment and encouraging positive change through repair, reuse and upcycling. The exhibition features interactive displays and school programs, and the public can also attend a special workshop at 6 p.m. on September 23 to learn practical skills for reducing textile waste and extending the life of clothing.
Mayor Liam Brazil said textile waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world, but many people are unaware of its environmental impact. He hopes this exhibition will raise public awareness and encourage people of all ages to get involved. The exhibition also supports Waterford City Council's Climate Action Plan and follows circular economy principles.
The exhibition will run at Waterford Central Library until September 28, then move to Dungarvan Library until October 5. The workshop is led by Lynn Haughton of The Upcycle Movement, who handles bookings.
This event highlights the significance of collective small actions for environmental protection, reminding the public to reduce waste and conserve resources through everyday consumption choices, contributing to a sustainable future.
