Swedish home furnishing giant IKEA is accelerating its push into the second-hand market, planning to launch its resale platform "IKEA Preowned" in the UK, aiming to compete with eBay, Vinted and others for growing second-hand trading demand.

IKEA said the platform aims to let consumers buy and sell second-hand IKEA products "as seamlessly as possible," but has not confirmed a launch date for the UK site, only saying more details will be announced "in the coming months." The move is seen as IKEA's direct response to the rise of the second-hand market and the user growth of eBay, Vinted and Facebook Marketplace. Notably, Vinted expanded from pure fashion categories to electronics and home goods between 2024 and 2025.

The UK plan is part of IKEA's global expansion of its second-hand platform. The platform first piloted in Norway and Spain in August 2024, entered Portugal and Poland in 2025, and further covered Belgium, Luxembourg and Sweden in early 2026.

An IKEA spokesperson said in a statement: "We are always looking for new ways to make home life better and help customers discover products they love. Launching a resale platform in the UK is an important step toward our goal of creating a simplified way to access second-hand IKEA furniture. Our aim is to make the resale of second-hand IKEA products as smooth as possible and build a trusted, vibrant space for IKEA Family members to trade directly with each other. We want buying and selling second-hand IKEA products to be simple, convenient and rewarding."

For the second-hand furniture and textile recycling industry, IKEA's move is a benchmark. A major furniture retail brand entering second-hand resale, rather than relying solely on third-party platforms or passive recycling channels, shows the trend of circular economy concepts penetrating from fashion into the home furnishings sector. It also suggests that in the future, second-hand home goods, including used textiles, may see more standardized and branded circulation methods.
