U.S. cookware retailer Sur La Table recently announced the launch of a secondhand marketplace called Second Servings, where customers can buy and resell pre-owned items from the brand and other brands it carries, including All-Clad and Le Creuset, with most items discounted between 50% and 70%. The move is the latest example of the secondhand resale trend in the home industry, aimed at meeting consumer demand for sustainable and cost-effective shopping options.
The platform's launch comes as the home retail market faces challenges, with several furniture companies recently filing for bankruptcy protection or closing stores, but Sur La Table is exploring new growth paths by expanding into the secondhand business.
For the home industry, this move is significant: it shows that traditional retailers are actively embracing the circular economy, extending product lifecycles through secondhand platforms while attracting price-sensitive consumers. It may also prompt more brands to consider similar resale strategies in response to pressure from environmental regulations and changing market demand.
