Rib can be understood as rib knit fabric, a knitted fabric made from various yarns. It is formed by rib stitches and can be produced on either double-needle bed circular or flat knitting machines. Our factory mainly uses ordinary flat knitting machines and computerized flat knitting machines, as well as circular machines for making seamless sleeves and lantern sleeves.
Rib is mainly used for collars, cuffs, hems, and other parts of clothing, and is a relatively common auxiliary material. Depending on the needle gauge of the knitting machine, it is mainly divided into 3-gauge, 5-gauge, 7-gauge, 9-gauge, 12-gauge, 14-gauge, etc. Different needle gauges can knit ribs of different thicknesses. Different needle arrangements can produce different textures, commonly including 4-flat, 11, 21, 32, pique, single-edge, etc. Because the same stitch method may be called differently by customers, when customers often mention 11, 22, 33, if I have not seen an actual sample or the customer explains the differences between these stitch methods, I generally use our 4-flat, 21, and 32 to make them.
Circular knit rib: The needle spacing is relatively large, so it looks looser. It can be single-ply or double-ply, and some varieties contain spandex. Generally, one side is slightly thicker and the other side is slightly finer, and it is relatively soft.
Flat knit rib: This kind of rib is relatively tight, has more plies, and fewer varieties contain spandex. The style of both sides is basically the same.
Differences between circular knit rib and flat knit rib
Needle gauge: generally finer gauges of 15-20G are more common; generally 16G and below down to 1G
  Tightness: relatively loose; relatively tight
Yarn use: single-ply or double-ply, often with spandex varieties; multi-ply or thick yarn, with fewer spandex varieties
Two-sided style: generally one side is slightly thicker and the other side is slightly finer; both sides are basically the same style
  Texture: relatively soft; relatively stiff
Uses: suitable for underwear, outerwear, and accessories; less commonly used for close-fitting underwear
Fabric: circular tubular greige fabric; open-width greige fabric
Difference in making accessories: generally more often used in double-layer folded applications, with folded edges used as edges; both ends and edges can be knitted with selvage
