U.S. retail giant Walmart recently announced a strategic partnership with ThredUP, a San Francisco-based online secondhand clothing platform, officially entering the online secondhand clothing sales sector. This move marks Walmart's first foray into the clothing resale market, aimed at deepening its fashion category layout.
According to reports, Walmart had launched related plans as early as a year ago, and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing economic downturn accelerated the launch of this service. Following the launch of the partnership, Walmart customers can purchase approximately 750,000 secondhand items through the Walmart.com/thredup page, covering fashion items such as women's clothing, children's clothing, accessories, handbags, and footwear.
Regarding logistics and returns, which consumers care about, the two parties offer quite attractive policies: customers can return items for free (either to Walmart stores or by shipping them back through ThredUP), and orders over $35 qualify for free shipping. However, the two parties did not disclose details of the specific revenue-sharing model for the partnership.
Walmart believes the partnership will help strengthen the diversity and appeal of its fashion brands and further expand its online fashion consumer base. This move also indirectly reflects traditional retail giants' emphasis on the rapidly growing secondhand fashion market.
ThredUP previously noted in its annual fashion resale market report that the entire secondhand clothing market is worth about $24 billion and is projected to grow to $51 billion by 2023. This data also explains why leading global retailers are scrambling to grab a share of this fast-growing market.
