Due to the natural properties of wool, even though wool textile raw materials have strict data-based quality grades, it is difficult to strictly control the detailed classification of wool raw materials according to data standards. The quality classification of homogeneous wool sweater raw materials is mainly based on three aspects:

  1. The fineness of wool. In strict data terms, fine wool has a count between 60 and 70, meaning the diameter of fine wool should be controlled between 18μm and 25μm. Wool raw materials exceeding 25μm are defined as heterogeneous wool and classified into other grades. Fine wool is a high-quality product in wool textiles, with better warmth retention, stronger elasticity, and more obvious moisture resistance and waterproof effects. Fine wool is divided into four grades according to average diameter: 70 count (diameter 18 to 20μm), 66 count (diameter 20 to 21μm), 64 count (diameter 21 to 23.0μm), 60 count (diameter 23 to 25.0μm), with finer being better and slightly coarser being inferior.

  2. The proportion of coarse hollow hair. The coarse hollow ratio of wool sweater raw materials refers to the proportion of wool that is difficult to dye, has low elasticity, short length, poor crimp, and similar issues, i.e., the proportion of wool that is difficult to utilize.

  3. Tactile sensory differentiation. Those long engaged in wool textile raw materials can roughly classify raw materials by hand feel, color, and fineness. Especially for heterogeneous wool, there are significant differences in hand feel and color. Only by basing on strict data classification of raw materials and using long-accumulated experience as a tool can we better subdivide the quality of wool sweater raw materials.
