The Luxembourg charity Kolping Lëtzebuerg has recently launched its 52nd used clothing drive. Unlike previous years, this street collection no longer uses container-style recycling bins, but instead uniformly uses used clothing bags to collect old garments and textiles. The organization says this move is meant to give discarded clothing a second life, and the proceeds will fund social projects in Luxembourg and abroad.
Kolping Lëtzebuerg president Marie-Jeanne Brauch said that the quality of used clothing received through street collection channels is often better than that from container collection points.
This drive still follows the organization's usual operating model: volunteers collect people's packed used clothing on the street, which is then processed centrally, with the proceeds going to social causes. The report did not disclose the specific target quantity or amount for this year's drive.
For the second-hand textile industry, Kolping's adjustment once again highlights that front-end collection methods directly affect the quality of recyclables—because street collection involves manual sorting, the clothing entering reuse channels is usually in better condition than that from mixed disposal in recycling bins. This also affects the costs and output of subsequent sorting, resale, and reuse stages.
