An InPost parcel locker in the car park of an Aldi supermarket in Garstang, UK, has led to £70 fines for Vinted sellers and buyers using the locker outside the supermarket's opening hours, due to ANPR cameras operating in the car park.
InPost says the locker is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing users to send, collect or return parcels at any time. However, Aldi's opening hours are 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays, and customers entering the car park outside these hours are recorded by cameras and automatically issued a penalty notice by ParkingEye.
One customer who received a fine said: "I couldn't believe it when the fine came through. I called Aldi customer services and they cancelled it. But it was still a shock when the letter arrived." The customer also noted that the ANPR record clearly showed the vehicle had only stopped for a few minutes to drop off or collect a parcel. "I won't be using it again until the issue is resolved. It's too worrying and troublesome."
Aldi has been rolling out InPost lockers at its UK stores since 2023 and has since expanded the partnership, with the service now covering more than 600 stores. The supermarket has said the lockers offer customers a convenient point to send and collect parcels while shopping. Jonathan Neale, Aldi UK's National Real Estate Managing Director, said at the time of the rollout: "Reaching 600 InPost lockers is an important milestone and reflects our commitment to making shopping at Aldi as convenient as possible. We are committed to understanding our customers' lives and continue to focus on saving them time by making everyday tasks easier."
Both Aldi and InPost have been asked for comment, with no further response yet.
