The Huantie Community of Gucheng Subdistrict in Shijingshan District, together with Tian Tian Jie Company, launched a designated recyclables collection event. In response to the surge of old clothing during seasonal changes and overflowing community collection bins, they offered residents two channels: designated drop-off and WeChat mini-program appointment for door-to-door pickup, with two modes distinguished: paid recycling and donation.

Key Points

  • Huantie Community partnered with Tian Tian Jie Company to hold a designated recyclables collection event, accepting old clothing, home textiles, shoes, bags, plush toys, etc.
  • Residents can use the "One-Click Call" WeChat mini-program to book recycling staff for door-to-door service.
  • The recycling offers two modes: paid recycling and donation; donors receive an exclusive donation certificate.

The event was implemented in May 2023 at Huantie Community, Gucheng Subdistrict, aiming to provide an outlet for recyclables such as old clothing, home textiles, shoes, bags, and plush toys generated by residents during seasonal changes. The site was set up at the community's domestic waste sorting station, where recycling staff uniformly wore green vests and sorted and weighed the items brought by residents.

Considering that many residents are accustomed to putting recyclables into community collection bins, and that bins tend to overflow during seasonal changes, the community chose centralized collection in the form of designated recycling. The event offered two processing paths: one is paid recycling by the recycler, and the other is voluntary donation by residents. Residents who choose to donate can receive an exclusive donation certificate, which to some extent solves the previous problem of old clothes deposited in collection bins having "unknown whereabouts and no feedback."

In terms of outreach, Huantie Community adopted a combination of online and offline methods. Online, notices were published through the community WeChat public account and resident groups to help residents understand the rules and significance of renewable resource recycling; offline, relying on the waste sorting station, staff from the recycling company provided on-site services and explanations. At the event site, Tian Tian Jie promoters focused on introducing the "One-Click Call" function of the WeChat mini-program, allowing residents to book recycling staff for door-to-door pickup on their phones without having to carry clothes to the station, achieving "turning waste into treasure without leaving home."

For the old clothing recycling industry, the characteristic of this case is the collaboration between recycling companies and communities, extending recyclables drop-off from fixed bins to designated events and door-to-door appointments, and using methods such as donation certificates to enhance residents' willingness to participate. For recycling companies deeply engaged in communities, this approach demonstrates a feasible path for connecting the chain of "sorting outreach—scheduled designated recycling—online appointments."
