Data from the Customs IT and Statistics Department of Vietnam's Ministry of Finance shows that from January to September 2026, Vietnam's textile and garment exports (excluding yarn and fiber) grew year-on-year, totaling about $30 billion; over the same period, yarn export value grew by about double digits year-on-year, with export volume also rising slightly.

Key points

  • From January to September 2026, Vietnam's textile and garment exports (excluding yarn and fiber) edged up year-on-year, reaching about $30 billion.
  • Yarn export value grew by more than about 10% year-on-year, with export volume rising in tandem.
  • In September alone, textile and garment exports fell month-on-month, while yarn export value and volume also declined month-on-month.

In terms of monthly pace, textile and garment exports in September showed a clear pullback from August, with value falling into the billion-dollar range; yarn export value and volume both fell that month, indicating that order delivery pace slowed somewhat toward the end of the third quarter.

The heat on the import side contrasts with the modest export growth. From January to September, Vietnam's imports of cotton, yarn and fabrics all rose from the same period last year, with fabric imports reaching the billion-dollar level and a considerable year-on-year increase, reflecting that downstream production's reliance on imported fabrics is still deepening.

The volume and structure of Vietnam's textile and garment exports have indirect reference significance for the global used-clothing and second-hand apparel trade: on the one hand, expanding garment exports mean ample supply of new clothing, which may suppress second-hand clothing demand in some markets; on the other hand, changes in yarn and fabric imports and exports also affect the regional circulation of recycled fibers and stock fabrics.
