Following successful pilots in Norway and Spain, Swedish furniture giant IKEA has announced it will launch its own branded secondhand furniture marketplace in the UK within the year, taking direct aim at existing resale channels such as Facebook Marketplace, Vinted, and eBay.

According to IKEA's official announcement, the platform will be dedicated to the buying and selling of secondhand IKEA-branded furniture between consumers, allowing users to interact directly and complete local transactions. Notably, users must register as IKEA Family members to use the service. Experience from the Spanish pilot platform shows that sellers can earn an additional 15% when selling through the official marketplace channel, with every transaction verified by IKEA and free buyer protection provided — the UK version is expected to follow a similar mechanism.

An IKEA spokesperson said the launch of the secondhand platform is "to make it easier to pass on IKEA furniture and create a trusted, vibrant trading space," with the goal of making secondhand furniture transactions between family members "simple, accessible, and rewarding," thereby "helping customers continue to enjoy IKEA products in a more sustainable way." The company has not yet disclosed a full launch date or further details, confirming only that it will open in the UK "in the coming months."

For the home furnishing industry, this move signals that leading brands are accelerating into the secondhand economy. Compared with general-purpose C2C platforms, IKEA serves its existing users through a proprietary closed-loop ecosystem, which can both strengthen brand loyalty and is expected to provide a more standardized path for furniture recycling and reuse. Its pilot model of "official verification + buyer protection" may set a new standard for the industry.
