Patricia Ermecheo, an entrepreneur from Miami, USA, was inspired to turn clothing back into fiber after witnessing large amounts of wearable old clothes being landfilled due to sizing issues. She developed her own equipment and built her first factory in Costa Rica to produce nonwoven materials. After that, she successfully spun 100% recycled yarn and launched recycled socks through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. In 2019, Nike proactively approached her for cooperation, and its yarn was used for the upper material of the Space Hippie shoe model. This collaboration brought OSOMTEX industry attention.
However, cooperation with a single brand brought short-term benefits but also faced insufficient sustained orders and expansion pressure. During the pandemic, she reflected on her business model and decided to shift from a consumer-facing brand to B2B services, helping other companies recycle their own materials and establish circular production systems. Currently, OSOMTEX is expanding into a broader material recycling platform, with the goal of promoting the sustainable transformation of the fashion industry from the supply chain level.
This case shows that secondhand clothing recycling is not limited to resale or simple reprocessing. High-tech fiber regeneration technology can give old clothes new commercial value, but its scale-up requires stable industry collaboration and long-term business model support.
